AFCA will fundraise to train youth in husbandry and gardening, and will purchase, transport, and deliver livestock and seeds to AIDS orphans. The day they receive livestock (goats, chickens, guinea fowl, sheep, or pigs), they also receive non-genetically modified seeds to start personal gardens. While youth drink milk and eat eggs from their animals, their gardens grow, giving the kids green vegetables, corn, and peanuts while their animals reproduce and herds/flocks grow. After a predetermined amount of time, when the flocks are large, the youth are allowed to sell, barter, slaughter, and eat their animals. With budgeting and marketing training, the youth are business owners who are able to care for themselves, paying for their own medicine, food, rent, and needs. Once the agreed-upon time has passed, the original beneficiaries must give some of their livestock to another orphan family, passing their good fortune forward to others.
The American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA) is an efficient and highly effective grass roots organization that acts primarily as a conduit between the extreme needs of HIV+ children in Sub-Saharan Africa and the vast resources of the western world. By participating in the Give for Youth Platform, we’ll be able to share our vision with more people and in turn, we’ll be able to help even more kids.
Funds raised will allow us to help more youth become self-reliant and able to care for themselves and their siblings, while sharing a small portion of their herds/flocks with others.
Our pilot project with 300+ orphaned families was a success and it is time to expand expand the program so that many other children and youth can benefit, as well. Funds raised through this platform will allow us to do just that – train and provide a hand up to children too-long forgotten, but who are talented and who want to move forward in life.
As an organization, we don't want to provide a hand out, but rather, a hand up. We do give children medicine and food, as needed, but at the same time, we train and encourage them to become self-reliant. We actually WANT to work ourselves out of a job! We want children and youth to become young entrepreneurs so that they can provide for themselves and for their loved ones. We invest in children who need hope and who want to move forward in life. We give them the opportunity to become what they never thought they could be and encourage them to do the same for others.
