Describe the creative youth microprojects that your nonprofit would fundraise for if you win.

:

Our goal is to build a small school in Cam Duc, Vietnam that will provide permanent space to offer our art and music classes through our Dream of Art School and Tuan’s Music School, two projects that have been successfully underway since 2011. Our Dream of Art School provides art classes to poor children living in the area and works with local school art teachers to provide them with materials and project ideas. One hundred children living in a local orphanage and 300 children attending one of the more impoverished, local elementary schools receive art classes and are provided with the opportunity to take part in an annual art show. Tuan’s Music School is run by a local musician and provides free violin and stringed instrument lessons to poor students in the area. The students receive both private and group lessons and all students come together to play in an ensemble.

Explain how possibly gaining funding through the Give for Youth platform would better able you to complete these projects.

Additional funding for Tuan’s Music School would allow us to purchase more instruments for our students who currently are sharing violins. Funding would also allow us to provide professional instruction to Tuan, our teacher. Funding for our Dream of Art School project would allow us to continue to purchase art supplies and paper. It would also provide us with the ability to provide local school art teachers with supplies for 300 children. Since the start of our programs a small student community has been built around the art and music programs. Kids are coming together and spending time in an environment outside of their very strict and rigid school lives and often very difficult home situations. Funding for our projects will help us to continue to expand and reach more children.

Describe why your nonprofit is innovative and entrepreneurial.

:

Creating an environment where kids are free to be themselves, to create, come together, and learn is a gift. As a universal language, art and music opens all cultures to all children. Opportunity for creative self- expression through music and art should be provided to students worldwide through public education, but is often provided only to the wealthy and elite. Young students living in poverty in Vietnam have little or no chance to learn a musical instrument, or to listen and learn about classical music. Although art is taught in the government run school system in Vietnam, only very restrictive forms of art are taught and the kids are often told what to draw, with no room for their own self-expression. Our projects provide creative opportunities for poor Vietnamese youth through music and art instruction.
