Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter

submission by julie.r.773

Describe the creative youth microprojects that your nonprofit would fundraise for if you win.

Camp Shout Out is dedicated to bringing together youth with fluency disorders, speech therapists, and graduate students, who are guided by fluency specialists to learn, teach, and empower each other to become the best communicators possible in a safe and fun environment.
Camp Shout Out is currently held in Holton, Michigan for a 1 week session in August. If we were to win we would fundraise in order to bring a summer camp/speech therapy/clinical training to other parts of the country and expand the number of sessions in order to reach and serve more young people who stutter. For the first two sessions of camp our camper enrollment was full well before the start of summer and we believe this will be true also for our third session.

Explain how possibly gaining funding through the Give for Youth platform would better able you to complete these projects.

Stuttering is a disorder that affects up to 5% of all school age children. When surveyed more than 70% of speech-language pathologists indicated that they were not as comfortable or confident working with children who stutter as they were with other disorders. The majority did not know how to teach most common stuttering modification techniques and did not know how to contact a fluency specialist for consultation. Children who stutter are often mislabeled as unintelligent or having a nervous disorder. A recent survey by the National Stuttering Association (NSA) reported that 80% of children who stutter had been bullied and/or teased and 40% of adults who stutter had been denied a job or promotion because of the speech disorder.
If we gain funding through the Give For Youth platform we would be able to not only reach more young people either directly or through their speech-language pathologist, we would also be able to educate the public about stuttering.

Describe why your nonprofit is innovative and entrepreneurial.

There are no known similar existing programs in Michigan or even in the United States, where school age students receive intensive therapy for stuttering and therapists similarly obtain intensive training in a traditional summer camp setting. Camp Shout Out was founded by specialists in the field of stuttering and frustrated parents of children who stuttered. We have partnered with a local YMCA summer camp to provide cabin counselors and recreation staff/programming. The component of this program cannot be found anywhere else. We have had participants travel to us from all over the United States as well as Canada, Guatemala, and New Zealand making this a truly international program. Camp Shout Out functions under fiscal sponsor Reeths-Puffer Education Inc a 501(c)3 non-profit.
